Heretics

Articles like this piss me off. The media needs to stop calling these guys Orthodox Episcopalian. To be orthodox you must adhere to the established doctrines of your church. These folks at Falls Church do not adhere to the doctrines of our church. There is a word for a minority that rejects the established doctrines of the church and that word is "heretic". So lets make sure we let the Post and other outlets know, these folks are not orthodox. We are the orthodox. We are conforming to the doctrines of faith as established through the cannons and resolutions of general convention. If the media wants to avoid labeling these folks as heretics, they can label them as dissenters; but not orthodox. We are orthodox.

Comments:
Right.

Actually, orthodoxy has little meaning anymore. The notion that any one group of people within the Christian tradition speaks for the whole tradition over its 2000 years is ludicrous. Orthodox is almost invariably the term trotted out to prevent the holders of any given position from having to support it with reasoned, evidence supported statements. Arguments from tradition simply speak to what people have done historically, not that it was ever a good idea or that it's a particularly good idea now.

Well, actually, the Orthodox are Orthodox.

As a lower-case concept, I don't think orthodoxy even exists, nor do I think it is something to be desired. Right belief does not interest me.

My question regarding the fellas' at The Falls, etc... is how Anglican are they? Anglicanism is something that can be defined and is to be desired.

All of us who call ourselves Anglican have agreed to some basics regarding what we believe (the creeds), how we worship (liturgically), our polity (bishops, etc...), and how we live (sacramentally.) We further agree that there's not much more to it than that, there's lots of latitude. We agree on that. So, to what extent are the... whatever we want to call them... to what extent are they promoting those values? That's what I wonder about.

Just me.
